How do I know if my alarm is working? / How do I test my alarm?

To test your alarm, simply press the circular button on the front of the alarm once. The alarm should beep and the LED should flash while testing. Do not try and test the alarm with burning materials or open flames around the device as this can be dangerous and is not the best way to test the sensor.

Where should I install a smoke alarm?

According to latest BS 5839‑6 standards, for maximum LD1 protection you should fit a smoke alarm in the following rooms: Hallway, Landing, Living Room, Bedroom, Airing / Meter Cupboards, Loft, Garage. A smoke alarm is not recommended for installation in a kitchen, you should install a heat alarm in kitchens.

Do smoke alarms detect carbon monoxide?

Smoke alarms do not detect carbon monoxide (CO), for this additional detection you need to also install a CO alarm or a combination smoke and CO alarm, such as the FireAngel SCB10.

Is it the law for landlords to fit a smoke or heat alarm?

In the UK, landlords must install at least one smoke alarm on every storey of a rental property where there is a room used as living accommodation. In addition, a carbon monoxide alarm must be fitted in any room with a solid fuel-burning appliance.

How do I stop false alarms from my smoke/heat alarm?

Ensure alarms are installed in appropriate locations. Smoke alarms should be kept away from kitchens and bathrooms where cooking fumes and steam can trigger false alarms.
Clean alarms regularly to remove dust or debris that could cause false alarms.
Consider installing heat alarms in areas prone to false alarms, such as kitchens and garages.
