APPCOG: Supporting Carbon Monoxide awareness week

CO Safety

17 November 2025

From November 17th to 23rd, 2025, FireAngel is proud to support Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week alongside the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG).

As the colder months approach, Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Week reminds us how vital it is to understand the dangers of this silent threat. Rising energy costs mean more households are using fuel-burning appliances, making awareness and prevention more important than ever.

The hidden dangers of Carbon Monoxide

Often called the “Silent Killer”, carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas produced when fuel doesn’t burn properly.

Exposure to CO can cause serious health problems, including brain damage, heart disease, and even death. The terrifying reality is that CO cannot be detected by sight, smell, or taste, meaning many people are unaware they are being poisoned.

Every year, around 50 people die from CO poisoning in the UK, with thousands more ending up in A&E. The good news? These tragedies are easily preventable with the right knowledge and protective measures.

Why CO alarms are essential

The only reliable way to detect carbon monoxide is with a working, audible CO alarm. These alarms act as your first line of defence, alerting you before CO reaches dangerous levels.

With the cost-of-living crisis driving some households to cut back on heating and rely on older or poorly maintained appliances, CO alarms have never been more critical.

If you’re wondering how many CO alarms you need in your home, find out here.

Here’s how to protect your home and family this winter:

  1. Service appliances regularly

Ensure all fuel-burning appliances, including boilers, fires, and cookers, are serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Faulty appliances are a leading cause of CO poisoning.

  1. Install audible CO alarms

Place alarms in every room containing fuel-burning appliances, including living rooms and bedrooms. Remember, CO is undetectable by human – an alarm is your only warning.

If your CO alarm ever goes off, make sure you know exactly what to do.

  1. Stay informed about regulations

New laws across the UK aim to improve safety:

  • England: Landlords must provide CO alarms in all rooms with fixed combustion appliances (excluding gas cookers). Non-compliance can result in a £5,000 fine.
  • Wales: From 1 December, every room with a fuel-burning appliance must have a CO alarm. Homes without them will be considered unfit for habitation.
  • Scotland: Since February 2022, all homes with fuel-burning appliances (except those solely for cooking) must have CO alarms installed.
  1. Stay warm safely

As the temperature drops, make sure you follow safe heating practices. FireAngel’s top tips for staying warm without the risk of CO poisoning can be found here.
